Stream Cleaning Assistance

Communities need both funding and NJDEP permitting assistance with cleaning, clearing and desnagging stream tributaries to the Delaware River that have become clogged with fallen trees, sediment and other debris that has accumulated during storm events.  Under a presidential disaster declaration, communities are eligible to apply to FEMA to reimburse costs associated with cleaning these tributaries; however, applications would need to be submitted within 60 days of a presidential disaster declaration.  Furthermore, community leaders are often unaware as to whether a NJDEP permit is required for various sediment and debris removal projects. The NJDEP is therefore prepared to educate local officials regarding which projects need such prior approval, as well as to help communities identify tributaries that would benefit from sediment and debris removal and provide guidance in proper stream cleaning methods to maximize flood relief and minimize environmental impacts. The NJDEP point of contact for regulatory guidance related to these projects is Helen Owens, who can be reached at (609) 292-2178 or by e-mail at helen.owens@dep.state.nj.us.
